Chronically cranky at work Four steps to help you - Hallie Crawford
Chronically cranky at work Four steps to help you According to a recent Gallup Poll 70% of the countryâs full time workers hate their jobs, GallupSurvey and need some positive ways to make a change. If youâre one of the 70%, hereâs what you can do to take action on your situation⦠1. First donât be too dramatic. Weâve all seen YouTube videos of people quitting their jobs by jumping out of a plane, or dancing on the desks: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xcv82ntxJO8. The very first thing you need to do before you take dramatic action (especially in case itâs not needed!) is to take some time to assess how bad it is. Is this a phase or is it a long term sense of dis-satisfaction? Get a sense of which scenario it is before you do something drastic. Weâre not discounting drastic action, sometimes quitting your job can be the best thing you can do! But other times a course correction is needed as opposed to a complete career make-over. So figure out which oneâs needed for you. 2. Be rational. We get emotionally worked up when weâre unhappy at work â" understandably. I was there, I was crying in the bathroom every day and tried shopping to help me feel better (it didnât work.) The second thing to do is to break it down. What is wrong with your job? Make a list. Then make a list of whatâs right â" there actually may be a couple of things, not many perhaps but some. See if you can come up with a list of both. Do you just have a bad boss but everything else is great? Or do you like your industry but the culture at your organization is the wrong fit? You may be in the right career, but at the wrong company. Write down what makes you unhappy so you can see it in black and white and analyze it â" how many things are on the list? Review it rationally Is it 10 things or just two things? 3. Have coffee with a friend and make a plan. Depending on your answers to the above, make a plan. Is a big change needed or a small one? Do you need to define your career direction or do you know what you want to do instead? Create the plan then think about what you can do right now to feel better at your job, even if itâs small changes. The sooner you focus on your future and are able to be happier where you are now, the more energy youâll have towards moving forward. 4. Be practical and passionate. Identify your career values, and what would be rewarding for you in a career. This is the passionate or heart piece of the equation. But also look at the practical side, the talents/skills you want to use, the work experience you currently have so youâre qualified for the next position youâre considering. People tend to err on the side of one or the other too much. They take a job just for the money. Or they follow heart and end up burned. Take it step by step and balance the two. Job Coach P.S. Working as a Mechanic No Degree, No Problem - Work It Daily
Working as a Mechanic No Degree, No Problem - Work It Daily This is a true story as told to DiversityJobs Street Smarts, where you can find career interviews for the job youâve been looking for. Visit to find an interview in your desired field today. I am a mechanic at Walls Garage in Greenwood, Mississippi. I have been working there since 1982. I fix a variety of cars, motorcycles, and small motor vehicles. We handle all kinds of problems from basic preventative maintenance to massive automotive repair. The most common misunderstanding about what we do is that all mechanics have encyclopedic knowledge of every car ever made. In reality, we own manuals for different makes and models of cars that help us navigate tricky repairs. For something relatively routine, like an oil change, we do not need to use the manuals very often. For something more complicated, like re-installing airbags, we routinely get out the manuals to make sure we are doing the work according to manufacturer specifications. I would rate my job as an eight. As a kid I loved working on cars, and today I get to do it full-time. I wish I had more control over my work hours - especially not having to work on Saturdays - but I enjoy my job a lot. I immediately started working as a mechanic after graduation. Some people go to a vocational or technology school to learn about automotive repair once they graduate from high school, but I went straight into fixing cars because I already knew a lot about them. I knew the owner of the garage, so it wasn't a problem to get a job there after graduation. I gradually got more hours as I worked longer and proved my skills. If I could go back, I might have gotten a certification in diesel repair - working on big trucks earns more money than regular cars. One time I installed a transmission backwards on a foreign car and it completely destroyed the drive train. It was an expensive repair and required an extra two weeks to fix. I was pretty embarrassed that day. I once had someone offer to pay for repairs in cookies and pies! She was a very sweet older woman who lived on a fixed income. She needed a relatively minor repair, so we donated the labor for free. It really helped her out in a tight spot. I enjoy working with my hands and helping people keep their cars in excellent condition. I feel good when I solve difficult problems with cars, like finding something wrong that other mechanics had overlooked. Customers can be extremely demanding sometimes. We occasionally have people bring in cars for service then insist we broke something in the car during repairs. They are usually just trying to scare us into providing free service. My job is not very stressful. We take our time and try to do a good job on every repair. I maintain a healthy work-life balance. I make about $63,000 per year. I think I am paid enough, and I feel so thankful to have that salary without a college degree. Be prepared to work few hours at a garage when you first start. My first few years of work were a steep learning curve, and only after I proved myself did I start getting better hours. I would like to buy the garage and run it myself. I haven't done it yet because the machinery and parts are so expensive, but I would love to own my own business. Job Seekers, Are You Committing These Resume Sins
Job Seekers, Are You Committing ansicht Resume SinsPosted on September 10, 2014October 29, 2018 by Trista Winnie With the average job posting receiving more than 250 applications, recruiters and hiring managers spend most of their time reading resumeslooking for ways to weed out candidates. What mistakes will keep you from being considered? Read on to learn some of the ways your resume may be hampering your job searchNot using keywordsMost employers these days use applicant tracking systems as part of their hiring process. This means that your resume will be scanned for keywords relevant to the job listing. If the right keywords dont appear on your resume, your resume will get passed overeven if youre actually qualified.Common keywords include things such as job titles industry-related tools (such as certain software programs) and degrees, certifications, or licenses. Applicant tracking systems make it even more important to be specific. For example, the terms accounting software and photo editing software are too generallist the specific programs youve used. Not having someone else proofreadHaving just one or two typos on your resume will get you immediately placed in the no pile 76 percent of the time, according to an Accountemps survey. Fortunately, there are a number of ways to make sure your resume is error-free. Tricks such as looking over a printed copy of your resume, or reading it out loud, will help by giving you a fresh perspective. Tools such as spell check are helpful, but will elend catch every error for you. Spell check wont notice if Marketing Manger is among your job titles, for example. Afresh set of eyeswill spot things that you dont, so ask a mentor, friend, or family member to proofread your resume and provide you with honest feedback. Not using enough white spaceYes, you can fit a lot of text onto a page by using 0.25 margins and 9-point text. No, that does not mean you should. Your resume should be easily readable at a glance. Avoid using p aragraphs key information is too easily buried in dense blocks of text, and hiring managers will not sit and dutifully read each and every word.Your resume is not an autobiographyits job is to quickly and clearly make the case that you are a good candidate for the role. White space is pleasing to the eye and makes it so that the text you do include stands out.If your resume is two pages long, and you have already resorted to tinkering with tiny margins and font sizesto keep it from getting any longer, then formatting isnt your issueyou need to edit. Not including months inemployment datesStreamlining your resume is a good idea in general, but in this instance, its best to err on the side of providing more information. Many people with employment gaps think that they can hide their period of unemployment by listing only the years they spent at each position, leaving off the months. Hiring managers know about this common trick, and will assume you are trying to hide something.Further, they will be left wondering how much experience you actually had in each role. If you say you worked someplace from 2012 to 2013, does that mean that you worked there two months (December 2012 to January 2013) or 24 months (January 2012 to December 2013)?The purpose of your resume is not to leave a hiring manager wondering about your experience and qualifications, but to provide them with all of the information they need to decide whether youre a good candidate for the position theyre filling.Using clichesWhen writing resumes, many people kiste back on corporate jargon because of a misguided belief that it makes them soundauthoritative. In reality, it mostly makes them sound vague. The verb interfaced is one of the more common culprits. When a job seeker says that they interfaced with someone, all they are really saying is that they met with someone. Remember, an effective resume is more than simply a list of job duties. Meeting with someone isnt an accomplishment in and of itself, and doesnt belong on your resume. Instead of putting the focus on the fact that you interfaced with someone, put the focus where it ought to be on why you met, the project you were working on, and what that project ultimately accomplished. Simplify your language and highlight specific achievements. The good news for those who have committed these resume sins is that each one involves a simple fix. Correct these errors, and your resume will garner much more interest.facebook inc Commentswpdevar_comment_1 span,wpdevar_comment_1 iframewidth100% important
